The Science Behind the Stories: Using Genetic Genealogy in Crime Fiction

This talk gives an overview of the investigative genetic genealogy process: what it is, where it is used and the basics of how it is undertaken. Nathan briefly discusses some real-life key cases that have used IGG and then moves on to his own fictional writing, focussing on the Venator Cold Case series, which uses this methodology to catch serial killers. He explains his meticulous research process, the experts that he consults and his process of writing.

The Journey and Process of Writing Genealogical Crime Mystery Stories

Following an introduction as to how he came to be writing genealogical crime mystery books, Nathan explores the actual process of writing. Using books from his genealogical crime mystery series as a basis for case studies, he discusses the progression from development of the initial idea, explores the real genealogical research methodology involved, through to the final writing of the novel.

Using Fact in Fiction

In this talk, Nathan discusses how he uses real genealogy and historical facts in his fictional writing. Using his genealogical crime mystery stories as case studies, he will discuss the issues and problems of combining fact and fiction and the use of authentic genealogical methodology. Nathan will also share some of the more interesting and less familiar records which he has used in the process of writing his books.

Where Fact Meets Fiction: behind the scenes of a genealogical crime mystery

In this talk, Nathan Dylan Goodwin, takes a deep-dive into one of his most popular books, The Sterling Affair, set in the world of 1950s international affairs of state. The talk explores how real history, facts and people were incorporated into a fictional story using both traditional and genetic genealogy to solve the mystery at the heart of this story.
